How Epoxy Flooring Is Installed: A Step-by-Step Overview

If you have never had epoxy flooring installed, the process can seem a little mysterious. Contractors show up, do their thing, and tell you not to walk on it for a day. What actually happens in between? Here is a clear picture of the full process, from empty floor to finished surface.

Understanding the steps also helps you know what questions to ask and what to watch for when contractors are working in your space.

Step 1: Surface Assessment and Moisture Testing (Day 1 Morning)

Before anything is mixed or applied, a professional should assess the condition of your concrete and test it for moisture. This includes:

Moisture testing: Using a calcium chloride test or an in-slab relative humidity (RH) probe. Some contractors use a simple surface moisture meter as a quick screen. The result determines whether a moisture-mitigating primer is needed.

Crack and damage inspection: Identifying what needs repair before coating. Not all cracks are created equal — surface cracks may be cosmetic, but active or structural cracks need attention.

Contamination check: Checking for oil, grease, curing compounds, old paint, or sealers that would prevent adhesion. A simple water test (does water bead up or absorb in?) is a quick indicator.

If a contractor shows up and skips moisture testing, ask about it directly. It is a basic step that serious professionals do not omit.

Step 2: Surface Preparation (Day 1 — The Bulk of the Work)

This is where most of the time goes, and for good reason. The concrete surface needs to be mechanically opened up so the epoxy has something to grip. Two methods dominate:

Shot blasting: An enclosed machine that fires steel shot at the floor at high speed, then vacuums it back up. It profiles the concrete surface and removes most contaminants in one pass. This is the gold standard for prep.

Diamond grinding: A walk-behind grinder with diamond-segment pads that abrades the surface. Also very effective, slightly more flexible for working near walls and in tight spaces.

Acid etching: A chemical process using muriatic acid that opens the pores of the concrete. Less effective than mechanical prep, more common in DIY applications. Most professionals use mechanical prep.

After profiling, any cracks or damaged areas are filled with epoxy filler compound and allowed to cure.

💡 Tip

The surface profile left by proper prep should feel slightly rough, like medium-grit sandpaper. If your concrete still feels smooth after prep, it probably was not done aggressively enough.

Step 3: Primer Coat

Once the surface is clean and profiled, a primer is applied. The primer penetrates into the pores of the concrete and creates a foundation for everything that comes after. In moisture-prone environments, a moisture-mitigating or vapor barrier primer is used.

Some systems skip the primer on very dry, well-prepared slabs. But most quality installations include it.

Step 4: Base Coat (Epoxy Body Coat)

This is the main epoxy coat — the layer that gives the floor its color, thickness, and core performance. It is mixed on-site in precise ratios (getting the mix ratio wrong is one of the causes of curing failure) and applied with a notched squeegee and a spike roller to ensure even coverage.

Dry time before the next coat is typically 6 to 16 hours depending on temperature and product.

Step 5: Broadcast (Optional but Common)

If your system includes color flakes, quartz aggregate, or anti-slip grit, they are broadcast (thrown or scattered) into the wet base coat while it is still tacky. Full broadcast systems cover the floor completely; partial broadcast leaves some color coat showing for a different aesthetic.

After curing, excess flakes are scraped and vacuumed off, and the surface is sometimes lightly sanded before the topcoat.

💡 Tip

Full flake broadcast significantly increases the texture and slip resistance of the finished floor. It also hides minor imperfections in the concrete beneath. For garages, it is a popular choice for both appearance and function.

Step 6: Topcoat / Clear Coat

The topcoat is the protective layer that you actually walk on. It seals the broadcast material (if any), adds chemical and abrasion resistance, and sets the final gloss level. Common topcoat materials include:

  • Polyurethane: Good chemical resistance, some UV stability
  • Polyaspartic: Excellent UV resistance, very hard, fast cure time
  • Epoxy clear: Very thick and hard, limited UV stability (will yellow in sunlight)

💡 Tip

If any part of the floor is exposed to sunlight or UV, make sure your topcoat is UV stable. Standard epoxy clears will yellow noticeably within a year in a sun-exposed space.

Step 7: Cure and Ventilation

After the final coat, the space needs to be kept clear and ventilated. Typical timelines:

  • Foot traffic: 12 to 24 hours after final coat
  • Vehicle traffic: 5 to 7 days after final coat (allow the full cure before parking)
  • Full chemical cure: 28 days (the floor reaches full hardness and chemical resistance over time)

The temperature in the space during curing matters. Most epoxy systems need to be kept above 50 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit during application and curing. Cold temperatures slow the cure; hot temperatures can cause surface defects.

💡 Tip

Plan your installation for a week when you can keep the garage above 55 degrees and will not need to park inside. Rushing vehicle traffic back onto a fresh coat is one of the most common causes of early surface damage.
