100% Solids Epoxy
What it is: The "solids" in any coating refer to the material that remains after the carrier (water or solvent) evaporates. 100% solids epoxy contains no carrier — the entire volume you apply stays on the floor. This means a single coat at 10 mils wet = 10 mils dry.
Performance: The highest-performing epoxy formulation. Extremely hard, thick, and durable. Chemical resistance is excellent. Typical dry film thickness is 10–25 mils per coat.
Drawbacks: Requires precise mixing (the resin-to-hardener ratio must be exact), has very short pot life (15–45 minutes depending on temperature), and typically requires professional application. Cannot be applied in thin layers — it's too thick to brush easily.
Best for: Commercial floors, industrial environments, heavy-traffic areas, garage floors where longevity is paramount.

Water-Based Epoxy
What it is: A two-part epoxy (resin + hardener) where water is used as the carrier. When water evaporates during curing, what remains is the epoxy film.
Performance: Significantly less durable than 100% solids. Because water is lost during curing, the final film thickness is much less than the wet application thickness. A coat applied at 8 mils wet might yield only 3–4 mils dry.
Advantages: Low VOCs (typically under 100 g/L), no flammability concerns, easy cleanup with water, and forgiving application properties. The most user-friendly formulation for DIY use.
Drawbacks: Lower chemical resistance, lower abrasion resistance, shorter service life (2–5 years in typical residential use). Not appropriate for heavy vehicle traffic or aggressive chemical environments.

What it is: An epoxy formulation that uses organic solvents (acetone, xylene, MEK) as the carrier. The solvents evaporate during curing.
Performance: Better penetration into concrete than water-based systems, providing excellent adhesion. Film build is between water-based and 100% solids. Chemical and abrasion resistance is solid.
Drawbacks: High VOC content (often 250–400+ g/L), highly flammable during application, strong odor, requires respirator use, and restricted or banned in some states (California, for example, has very restrictive VOC regulations). Cleanup requires solvent.
Best for: Environments where deep penetration and adhesion are critical, commercial applications with adequate ventilation.
Polyaspartic and Polyurea: The Newer Options
These aren't technically epoxy, but they're often used as topcoats over epoxy systems. Key advantages: UV stability (won't yellow), faster cure times (sometimes same-day use), and excellent abrasion resistance. Polyaspartic is increasingly used as a complete floor system in garages and commercial spaces, competing directly with traditional epoxy.
